FMA: Alphonse Elric W.I.P

The story behind Full Metal Alchemist is one of my favorites, to say the least. It's a touching animé, which manages to retain that perfect mix of humor and drama that so many other stories tend to miss. The Elric brothers play the main roles in FMA - both strive to be alchemists since an early age, after their father, and end up hitting the brick wall of one of alchemy´s biggest taboos, human transmutation, when their mother dies, and they try to revive her. Edward, the older of the siblings, loses an arm in the process, and Alphonse, his entire body. Ed, however, manages to bind his brother's soul to a suit of armor by drawing a blood circle, and thus ends up losing a leg in result of the exchange needed - and the basic rule - for alchemy. Both learn that alchemy is much more than an equivalent exchange process, and decide to travel the world in order to fix their bodies and discover why human transmutation is such a taboo.

This is the work in progress for Alphonse, something I've been working on and off for months. There's still a bunch of stuff to work on, and mind you, it'll still go into Zbrush for detailing, but I wanted to post its progress for you to see. I hope you like how it's going so far, I'm eager to finish it!

Update:

It's still a work in progress but I'm moving on to another project. I'm using Zbrush's toon shade mat cap for this look.

Kame's House

This is the final project in the rendering/lighting class I took last year. The original house was much simpler in terms of structure, and the trees had a bunch of leaves that my computer just couldn't handle, so I turned it into Master Kame a.k.a Master Roshii's house in his island. What began with hopes and dreams that it would be a lighter load, quickly turned into yet another long rendering period - from Christmas day 2009 'til yesterday, January 7th, 2010.

17 XSI render passes, a bit of tinkering with Combustion and a few more minutes of waiting for a computer to render something later, and here it is.

I hope everyone enjoys it, it's super simple, but a nice way to open the new year, nonetheless.

This is a sub-surface scattering exercise, using my friend Mauricio Sampaio's base model and adding my personal touch to it in texturing - Dhalsim! YOGA!

I'll still work on the skulls, in order to add a little more texture to them, but this is what I'm turning in, as the class ends tomorrow. Then it's off to the holiday break, and that means, back to modeling and drawing!

Nothing too out of this world here, just an exercise involving a common room, and lighting. One of a day time event, and the other for a light bulb. Both use global illumination and final gathering. Done during the lighting and rendering class I'm almost through taking. Three more weeks to go.

Hello everyone! Sorry for the long hiatus, it's been pretty hectic around here. Anyway, I'd like to start a new series of posts regarding my latest project, the Calsonic Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 #12 car that I posted a while back. It's nearly finished, as part of my illumination and rendering class.

As a slow starter, here are the decals I remade in order to use on the car, some on Illustrator and some I repainted directly on Photoshop.

This time, I'm using XSI for the render, in Mental Ray instead of Max and Vray. I'll have the final results soon, keep an eye out for the next few posts showing some more of the details! See ya!

An elegant weapon for a more civilized age...

I started making Count Dooku's lightsaber today, and even though it might seem simple at first, it's a twisty and curvy model to make. Still working on the bump mapping for the hilt surface, and the glow was worked on elsewhere, not on 3ds Max.

Hey, I've been putting together a modeling portfolio in order to get a job in a local production studio that a friend used to work at. The catch is that place only uses 3ds Max, so I spent the entirety of last month using Max as a modeling platform, from zero interface knowledge whatsoever, just following tips from another kind friend, tutorials and Max's own help module. Here's the latest model I worked on for that modeling reel:

I'm pretty happy with the results, compared to not knowing anything about modeling in Max about four weeks ago and now this! I also modeled a Sony PSP, but haven't gotten around to texturing it yet.

As for normal XSI modeling, I started making yet another car, a Nissan Skyline GT-R. It's so I can use it in the texturing/lighting class I started taking in July. It'll eventually become a Calsonic Skyline GT-R #12, in a grant turismo paintjob style. That's still a bit off, but here's the progress so far:

I also have the last version of that Iron Man bust I posted a while back that I'll try using on this new class as well:

I stopped working on that bust because I really wanted to make an Extremis version of the Iron Man armor based on Ari Granov's drawings. It's still in a really early stage, so it's just a mention in this post, with no pictures! Call me lazy! :)

Wacky Races: Convert-A-Car Final Shot

This is the final shot for my Wacky Races contest entry. The idea is that the shot was taken from an old 1970's cartoon reel. It aged along with it, with its colors worn out, the film grained and scratched, and the photo itself getting shoved into drawers and under books. Like old cartoons that rerun on TV ad nauseam nowadays, without any sort of care given to the picture - or even sound, for that matter.

This is a side project I've been working on for a contest from CG-AUTO, one of the websites I posted my Ecto-1 model on. The theme is Wacky Races, the 1970's Hanna-Barbera cartoon, and my car choice was the Covert-O-Car, #3, driven by Professor Pat Pending. Basic modeling was done in XSI and the rendering is being worked on 3ds Max.

Ghostbusters' ECTO_1: XSI Mental Ray Test renders

My PC is almost giving up on me. For every five render tries, it hangs up on four. I'm going to move to another program, 3ds Max, in order to give a try at realistic rendering. In the mean time, check out this layered version that combines the many occlusion, colored, textured, simple shader test renders in XSI's Metal Ray I ever made with the ECTO-1. Image quality isn't very high, please don't mind!

Gave a crack at rendering the finished ECTO_1, with a simple XSI Metal Ray shader. After a couple of runs, I layered the results down in Photoshop. I'm studying how I'll be doing the actual texturing and rendering of the final image, so it might take longer than expected to have that up.

In the actual model, you might have noticed a few changes to the front of the car. I remade the grating from scratch. Now it looks just like the actual part instead of the two dimensional grid I had there before, which always seemed to bother me whenever I looked at the car from certain angles.

Ghostbusters' ECTO_1 W.I.P: Interior

Hey, yet another update on the ECTO_1 project, now with partial interiors done! Seats, dashboard, consoles, nobs, door interiors, and all the baggage container items ready. Note the rack in the back section of the car - that's where the proton packs will go.

I'm fairly sure the interior will not take too long to complete. The render I plan to take with this car will feature more of the outside than anything, but detail is everything, so that's why I am taking a lot of care to get the innards right.

So this is the big thing I've been working on for the past month or so. Making one of my favorite movie rides has definitely been a blast. The version I'm posting now has its exterior modeling practically done - save a few tweaks, here and there, like taking all non 4-sided polys out, for instance. There will be an interior view as well, along with a full texture work, so there's still loads of work to be done!

I keep a folder called 'references' in my internet browser. Everybody does it. Well, in mine, I have lots of websites from artists that worked on my favorite games, movies or just people I found while browsing around. One of these artists is Twincruiser. Twincruiser is an unique name right out the gate - it's actually two people working under the same name. Twin brothers, Michel and René. I ended up discovering them while looking for more Samwise Didier drawings. He has a shared site with some fellow Blizzard artists, and Twincruiser's profile is among the artists there. There's a sad story related to this name. One of the brothers, Michel, passed away in 2004, at the incredibly young age of 19. The first orc and the dwarf are his drawings I practiced upon. I liked the orc a lot.

The ogre is an attempt at something mine, basing myself on Alan Lee's style.

I really enjoy the original Megaman games from the Nintendo era. The first one is among my favorites. This is something I've been working on the last few days with my friend Pedro. This one started out based upon Alan Lee's "goblin" sketch in the Lord of the Rings Sketchbook, then took its own way since that sketch is very... well, sketchy. I tried to base some of the body armor on the Mongolian style, mixing it up with the mixture of ideas that constitute the word 'armor' in my head, that is, chain mail and scales.

Drunken Master

Here's the first sketch on the Drunken Master project I'm starting. Taking a frame from the 1978 movie as a reference - Chan's Fei Fong Wong, the laid back kid who becomes the new master of the drunken style kung-fu. In this frame, Jackie starts to get drunk in order to act out one of the various drunken gods' styles nearing the film's climax. The muscle lines are exaggerated on purpose.

I've been reading a lot of the Indiana Jones Omnibus comic series lately, and I felt like trying out drawing old Dr. Jones like he is in the cover. Seeing the sketch as it was made it a little boring, so I took two minutes to put a very quick and light coat of rough paint on it. Better late than never to go back to painting, I say!

This is yet another study into drawing that I went into this week, using Jordu Schell's The Hulk sculpture. I'm still having some issues with fingers and some of the muscles, so I'm taking it slow and trimming those corners as I get to them.

My scanner's showing its age, a lot of the detail and some of the lines in my drawings are disappearing once I scan them. I gave a try using the RGB mode in Photoshop scanning node, so it isn't as bad now. This is a Hellboy sketch based upon Koby Jukes' 3d sculpture from his website. I'll try to work on the clothing the next draft I make, adding Hellboy's signature jacket and some pants. The man's losing some dignity with those shorts, don't you think?

I made some more drawings for practice...

While I was watching Jackie Chan's "Drunken Master", I had the idea to draw him. With that in mind, I extract some of the DVD's frames, especially the part where Jackie acts out the various styles of drunken kung fu.

Sadly, the eskimo is still in the freezer - I decided I wanted to improve my drawing skills a bit more before going back to Zbrush, but the temptation sure is strong. I really want to start working on Jackie himself as a 3d model, in the drunken master pose. Before that, though, I'll finish the old eskimo man. Some changes will be made to him, which will shape how he will look much older and wise (I hope!).

I promise postings will be quicker from now on. If they're not, feel free to nudge in some complaints! :)

Slowly, but surely, I'll fill out the blanks in my blog. I plan to make a full translation of my graduation paper (in .pdf format), along with its Flash presentation, that was shown to a board of examinators in the SENAC college campus in São Paulo.

Super Rag Mario

Here's a little game I made basing it off Super Paper Mario, only in 3d. Rag dolls were obviously an inspiration, but the main focus of this was to work under a crazy deadline - I made it in under three hours. I wanted to make Mario like a toy, a doll or even a sort of keychain that people collect. Nothing to go crazy for, but fun to make nonetheless.
